NEW YEAR 2018 VILAMOURA GOLF TOUR
With Barney and Jennie taking the main group to Dona Filipe, our intention of a smaller group in Vilamoura came to fruition and we met at the Tivoli Marina Hotel to get acquainted before enjoying the excellent weather (a thought was spared to those back home in the UK) and equally excellent golf courses of the region.
The Old Course course, still the favorite of many, was our first day venue where Wanda, Alan and Neville opened the week with 74 points and a four shot victory.
The second day took us to the newer of Quinta do Lagos three courses, Laranjal. A complete contrast to The Old and a different kind of test through the orange groves rather than the pines, but equally enjoyable. Remarkably, three teams out of four scored 66 points while Ian, Gurdip and Alan returned another winning score of 74.
Our New Years Eve game was played over the regular Portugal Masters venue, Victoria. An Arnold Palmer design, and what a fine legacy he has left us in the Algarve, especially the testing back nine where more than a little water asks for some strategic and accurate play.
Not surprisingly, Ian, Liz and Neville we’re comfortable Winners of the team event as they were the leading two gents on 37 and 34 points respectively and leading lady on 31 in the individual stableford run in conjunction! A splendid round in fact from Ian, accumulating his score on the first 16 holes before the aforementioned water reached his brain on the last two!
The New Year was seen in in different ways. Two of our couples joining the extravaganza at Dona Filipe for a traditional party, while as previously planned, the rest had a more normal, but excellent dinner in “Peppers Steak Restaurant” at our hotel before raising a glass of champagne to the new year firework display on the hotels beach.
A quiet day away from the fairways on New Year’s Day was followed by 18 holes at another of the more established layouts, Quinta do Lago South, for our penultimate round, a course I enjoy more each time I play it. Playing in the same four ball, nip and tuck all the way, Neville and Arnold pipped Vanessa and Alan 39 to 38 to win the 4BBB.
By the final day we were pretty much a bunch of crocks! Ian with his knee, Wanda and Charlie having to attend a medical appointment, my three month lay off with tendentious still keeping me off the course and a few very tired bodies thrown in, led to 3 three balls doing battle over the Millennium course – Julian, Neville and Vanessa returning 74 points for a handsome victory. Let’s hope 2018 doesn’t continue in a similar vein medically!!
Hope to see you soon.
