st Round – The day turned out a tad grey for the start of our golf tour, with a hint of rain in the air and during the first nine holes it decided to come out of the air! However it cleared up on the back nine and a watery sun came out late in the day. We started off with a pairs competition and there was some excellent scoring over the undulating Leominster Course. We had a tie for first place with Richard & Rita and Patrick & Rosemary amassing a very good 43 points.
nd Round – Although cloudy the weather was warm and with a touch of breeze perfect for golf. The Herefordshire Golf Course is blessed with rolling fairways and some terrific views, with the course offering a really interesting mix of holes. As yesterday the putting surfaces were excellent and our group made full use of them! We opted for another pairs competition and in runner up spot was Patrick & Lesley with 40 points. However, in first place, for which I was fortunate to have a front row seat as I played with them, was Peter and first time DSG client Nigel, with a brilliant 44 points. It was great dove tailing between the two and Peters’ steady play was augmented with some super golf from Nigel. Highlight of which was was the 9th where he bent a 3 wood round the trees and on to the green and then rolled in the subsequent putt for a birdie!
rd Round – At the very friendly and considerably flatter Monmouthshire Golf Course in Wales today and the weather was very kind to us. The format today was our hybrid scramble, where on the front 9 the team record one score per hole and then do the normal step aside scramble for the back 9. There was some excellent scoring, with some gross birdies being recorded on the sporty front nine. We had some good golf on the back 9 too and this format really encourages positive play. So our most positive quartet was Peter, Patrick, Angie and Rita with a super 64.6 wining by 2 strokes. We could all sit outside after golf again which apparently is unheard of in a Welsh summer.
th Round – Although the Rolls in the title of the golf course is the family name of the estate, it describes the venue perfectly. The undulations and tricky greens gave our group plenty of challenges, which of course they were up to. A two from four scores to count was today’s competition and very keenly contested it was too. After a great day’s golf the quartet of Rosemary, Nigel, Patrick & Jennie triumphed by all of a point.
th Round – We finished on a lovely day for golf at the superb tree lined Ross-on-Wye Golf Course. Apart from Les, none of our group had played the course before. In fact Les had been a junior member there, so I guess we should have trimmed his handicap for this round. As we had 16 players again, we opted for a team event and sure enough the team featuring Les came second on the day! The winning team was Rita, Nigel, Tony and Patrick. Everyone was really impressed by the course, which is beautiful and had the quickest greens we faced on our golf tour.
It was a great week in a lovely part of the UK and it would be remiss of me not to mention the laughs we had finding some of the courses. Also the wonderful service and hospitality afforded to us at The Three Counties Hotel, where we had dinner and the odd glass each evening. A very good tour and something we will look to repeat in the not too distant future.
